The Laidback Crowd-Sourced Canvas: How Our Community Is Helping Us Co-Create the Perfect Tee
Share
When we launched LAIDBACK, our mission statement was clear: we wanted to make clothing that creates conversation. What we didn’t anticipate—and what has been the most beautiful surprise of our fledgling journey—is that our brand has started a massive, roaring conversation about the clothing itself. Lately, we haven’t just been designing in a silo. Our community has pulled up a chair, poured a coffee, and stepped right into the design studio with us. From the threads we weave to the sizes we cut and the jokes we print, LAIDBACK is fast becoming a living, breathing experiment in product co-creation.
Here is a look behind the scenes at the conversations you are starting, and how you are helping us build the ultimate t-shirt from scratch.
The Great Fabric Debate: From Bamboo to Supima
It turns out our community cares just as much about touch and sustainability as we do. When we asked what "ultimate comfort" felt like to you, the feedback opened up a world of textile exploration:
- Bamboo Cotton: A crowd favorite for its breezy, moisture-wicking properties and silk-like drape. Perfect for those hot summer days when you just want to take life easy.
- Supima Cotton: For the premium crowd who argued for ultra-durable, long-staple cotton that retains its shape, resists pilling, and feels like a luxury cloud.
- Slub Fabrics: For those who love a bit of organic texture, suggesting slub knits that give a perfectly imperfect, vintage beach vibe.
Because of these conversations, we aren’t just sticking to ordering standard blanks; we are now working on sourcing fabrics based directly on your skin’s demands. More work for us, interesting nonetheless!
Real Fits for Real Bodies: Plus to Women’s Custom Cuts
Standardized, boxy fast-fashion sizing doesn't cut it anymore, and our community made sure we knew it. You asked for inclusivity, but more importantly, you asked for thoughtful tailoring.
Our chats have been flooded with ideas on how to perfect the silhouette. Women in our community reached out asking for specialized cuts—tees that feature a truly flattering neckline and sleeves that don’t pinch. At the same time, we received incredible feedback on expanding our Plus-size patterns, ensuring they aren’t just "scaled up," but meticulously engineered to offer room, comfort, and confidence without sacrificing the drape. Likewise for some of our male brethren who have been pushing us to move higher on the extra large side of the spectrum to up our range to atleast 3XL.
We hear you loud and clear: Comfort belongs to every body.
Content & Design Ideas: The Ultimate Brainstorm
The most thrilling part of this journey has been watching our community take over the Cryptic, Clever, and Comic side of the brand.
Our community is not comprised of passive consumers; they are natural storytellers, unreservedly passing on advice and opinion. Must admit its incredibly hard to tell which one is which with Friends! You’ve been dropping incredible text prompts, sketch ideas, and clever puns in our DMs. Whether it’s a fresh take on our "Me Time" philosophy or a hilariously cryptic graphic concept that only a true minimalist would understand, the design pipeline for LAIDBACK is now going to be fueled entirely by User-Generated Content (UGC).
Co-Creation: Moving Past the Brand, Designing the Product
A lot of modern businesses talk about "community building," but they usually just mean having an active comments section. At LAIDBACK, we are aiming for something much deeper.
We are moving into true co-creation. When you wear a LAIDBACK tee, we want you to look down and know that your feedback helped pick the stitch, your vote selected the fabric blend, and a collective joke inspired the graphic.
By turning our fledgling brand into an open-source canvas, we’re proving that the best products aren’t made by corporate focus groups—they’re made by a group of passionate, easy-going people hanging out, swapping ideas, and trying to put a little more positivity into the world.
What should we design next? The floor is yours. Drop your ideas for our next drop in the comments below, or DM us on our socials. Let’s keep the conversation going.
